Building automated bidding on Google Shopping powered by AI/ML is a tremendously difficult task. If you like taking on things you don't know how to do (yet), and want to work really hard at finding solutions - we have a great opportunity for you.

Why this problem is worth solving

A large and growing portion of the revenue for online retail is coming from Google Shopping. That makes finding ways to gain better (and better) margins there a high priority, and improvements make a big difference on their bottom line. But isn't Google already doing this? Yes, and no. We are providing a tool with more transparency and accuracy than Google's own tools offer e-commercers today. Our transparency also allows clients to gain insights they can use on other platforms. The ultimate goal is to fully maximize the ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) for all our clients.

In short - this is worth solving because it matters greatly to e-commercers.

Our progress so far

We have built a first generation (and done a series of iterations) of our bidding software, we are live, we have clients and we are successfully winning converting traffic for our clients. But we are not winning every auction, every time, even those we should. So success is not equal amongst all clients, and everyday we are trying to better understand the reasons for it. We know we could do more with improving our algorithms, using new data sources and adding functionality. This is what we love doing, and we are far from done.

We began building in R, and have progressed over to Python to manage well in production. What was once a project on a single computer, has been migrated into the cloud for scalability. We have the first version of all the pieces we need in place to truly take this to the next level. The nature of any bidding algorithm is that there are a lot of complex unknowns, which will remain unknown, and we need to find ways to succeed regardless. This is where you and our R&D/algorithm team comes in. We have good indications that reinforcement learning will play a key role going forward, something we trust you to explore.

The Team

The team tackling this problem today is lean and consists of two people. When our new Head of AI come in we see that the real job of building a team begins. Our estimation is that the team should 3-4 people at this stage. We think nobody is better suited at finding your best colleagues than you.

The company

Bidbrain.com is a challenger within Speqta (publ). This means we have the freedom and speed of a startup, while being backed and stabilised by being part of a group noted on the stock exchange. In total we have about 15 people working on the product organised in sales, csm & tech. We are a committed crew of people dedicated to making the bidding solution we wish we would have access to ourselves. Many of us have been on the e-com side, ran our own businesses and generally worked in the space for some time now. We host gaming and board game nights, throw parties and obsess over how to be the best we can be for our clients together.

Our new Head of AI

We think that you have quite some battle ground experience from production environments running AI/ML solutions. It is possible that you have a background in robotics, or a similar field packed with navigating on incomplete data (how does something know what to do, when it doesn't know what to do?). Image recognition is another space we believe could bring powerful insights although there are a lot more "ready made" components there than we have for bidding. A lot of explorative work will need to be undertaken, and you need to lead that endeavour.

Domain knowledge within data science & data engineering is important, you should be well versed in Tensorflow and have experience from the open source materials there are. We also think that monitored reinforcement learning is going to be key in the future of our product.

Chances are that you have studied this in depth at a technical university, perhaps even gotten a PHD in something related.
